The Antarctic Micronational Union (AMU), representing a collective of micronations dedicated to the principles of environmental preservation and international cooperation, expresses its profound alarm and opposition to the recent announcement by the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the establishment of a military base in Antarctica.
This unprecedented move not only contravenes the spirit and letter of the Antarctic Treaty System, which has been the cornerstone of preserving Antarctica as a demilitarized zone for scientific exploration and international peace since 1959 but also poses a direct threat to the fragile ecological balance of one of the Earth’s last untouched frontiers.
Antarctica’s unique environment plays a crucial role in global climate regulation and acts as a vital field for scientific research that benefits humanity as a whole, including the Iranian people. The continent’s preservation is beyond the interest of any single nation; it is a global common good that demands respect for established international accords.
We, therefore, urge the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to reconsider its announced plans. Such actions not only undermine decades of international diplomatic achievements but also endanger the environmental integrity and peaceful purposes of Antarctica. We call on Iran to affirm its commitment to global stewardship, respect international law, and join the international community in safeguarding Antarctica for future generations.
In light of the urgency of this matter, the AMU is prepared to engage in dialogue and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that the sanctity of Antarctica is maintained. We implore Iran to consider the far-reaching implications of its actions and to act responsibly for the sake of global peace, environmental conservation, and the scientific value that Antarctica represents.
